This page covers the part of the scale women's rings are usually ordered in, plus stacking and sizing changes over time. For a complete overview, see the complete millimetre conversion table.

Before the chart, one thing worth being clear about: ring sizes are not gendered. There is no women's scale and no men's scale. A US 7 is a US 7 on anybody, because the size measures a finger rather than a person.

What a "women's ring size chart" usefully means is the part of the scale most women's rings are ordered in, and the buying considerations that tend to come with them. That is what this page covers.

Sizes below US 4 and above US 9 are entirely normal — this is simply where the bulk of orders sit. The full chart runs from US 3 to US 13, and children's sizes continue below it.

What is the average women's ring size?

US 6 and US 7 are the sizes ordered most often, and jewellers commonly keep a US 7 as their sample size for women's rings. In UK terms that is around L½ to N½; in EU sizing, 52 to 54.

An average is a poor guess for one person

That range describes the busiest part of a wide distribution, not a typical individual. Plenty of people sit two or three sizes either side of it, and finger size correlates only loosely with height or build. If you are buying for someone specific, the average is a fallback for when you have exhausted every way of finding out, not a shortcut past trying. Better ways to find someone's size discreetly

Things that shift the size you need

Band width

Many women's rings are slim — 2 mm or under — and slim bands are what standard sizing assumes. If you are buying something wider, particularly 6 mm or more, it will wear tighter than the same nominal size in a thin band, and most jewellers suggest going up half a size. How much to add for width

Stacking rings

Two or three bands worn together on one finger behave like one wide band. If you plan to stack, size for the combined width rather than each ring individually, or the stack will feel tight even though each ring measured correctly on its own.

Engagement ring and wedding band together

The same principle, and it catches people out because the two are usually bought months apart. If the wedding band will sit against the engagement ring, size the pair as a unit. Some jewellers will size a fitted band to the specific engagement ring. Engagement ring sizing in detail

Pregnancy, and changes over time

Finger size is not fixed for life. Pregnancy commonly causes noticeable swelling, often over a size, and it does not always fully reverse afterwards. Weight change, age, and some medications all shift it too. A ring bought a decade ago is a record of a finger you may no longer have. Why finger size varies

Left hand or right hand?

Measure the exact finger the ring will be worn on. The same finger on opposite hands commonly differs by around half a size, and for most people the dominant hand is slightly larger. For a wedding or engagement ring in most Western countries that is the fourth finger of the left hand, but conventions differ by country and by person, so do not assume.

Getting an accurate measurement

The chart converts a measurement; it cannot supply one. If you have a ring that already fits the correct finger, measuring it is the most reliable home method available. If not, a paper strip around the finger works well.

How reliable are these conversions?

The millimetre figures are consistent and checked, but the size labels attached to them are convention rather than enforced standard. Published charts vary between manufacturers by up to roughly a quarter of a size. When precision matters, quote the inside circumference in millimetres and use the retailer's own chart rather than a general one.

Questions about women's ring sizes

What is the average women's ring size?

US 6 and 7 are ordered most often, which is roughly UK L½ to N½ or EU 52 to 54. Jewellers typically keep a US 7 as their sample. This is the busiest part of a wide distribution rather than a reliable guess for any individual.

Are women's and men's ring sizes on different scales?

No, it is one scale. A US 7 is a US 7 on anyone. The only genuine differences are where each group tends to fall on the scale and the fact that rings marketed to men are often wider, which does change the size required.

Should I size up for a stacking set?

Usually yes. Several bands worn together on one finger behave like a single wide band and will feel tighter than each ring did alone. Size for the combined width rather than for each ring individually.

Will my ring size change during pregnancy?

Commonly, yes, and often by more than a full size. Swelling is normal and usually reduces afterwards, though not always completely. Many people move a ring to a chain or a larger finger during the later stages rather than resizing something they will want back at its original size.

Which finger should I measure for an engagement ring?

The exact finger it will be worn on. In most Western countries that is the fourth finger of the left hand, but the convention varies by country and by individual preference, and left and right commonly differ by about half a size. Do not measure one and assume the other.
