What this site can tell you about ring size, and what it cannot.

This site publishes ring sizing information for general reference. It is accurate to the best of our ability and checked automatically, but there are real limits to what any website can tell you about how a ring will fit your finger. Those limits are set out below.

Ring sizing has no single enforced standard

ISO 8653 defines a ring size as the inside circumference in millimetres, and most of continental Europe follows it. The US and UK systems predate it, are governed by convention rather than regulation, and are not centrally enforced.

The practical consequence is that published size charts differ between manufacturers, commonly by up to about a quarter of a size. Our chart reflects the most widely used figures. It cannot reflect the internal standard of every jeweller in the world.

Our figures are estimates

The calculator converts the measurement you give it. It cannot verify that the measurement is correct, and it has no way of knowing:

  • whether you measured at a time of day when your fingers were at their typical size;
  • whether you pulled the strip too tight;
  • whether the ring will clear your knuckle;
  • how wide the band you intend to buy is;
  • whether that band is standard fit or comfort fit;
  • which specific manufacturer's chart the retailer uses.

Each of those can move the correct answer by half a size or more. Treat our output as a well-founded starting point, not a guarantee.

For anything expensive, see a jeweller

This matters most where it costs most

For an engagement ring, a wedding band, or any ring that cannot easily be resized, have the finger measured in person on a set of metal sizing rings. It is normally free, takes minutes, and lets you feel the actual fit and test knuckle clearance with a real ring. No website can do that, and we are not claiming to.

The guidance here is maintained by a named editor and checked against an automated test suite. How the figures are verified

No professional relationship

Using this site does not create any professional or advisory relationship. We are not jewellers, we do not sell or resize rings, and we have no way to verify anything about a purchase you are considering.

Purchasing decisions are your own

We provide information; you decide what to do with it. We accept no liability for losses arising from a ring that does not fit, resizing costs, restocking or return fees, or a purchase that cannot be returned.

Before ordering, particularly for a ring that may be hard to alter, we suggest you check the retailer's own size chart, their returns policy, and whether the specific ring can be resized and by how much. Which settings can be resized

Health information

Some pages describe why fingers change size, including the effects of temperature, fluid retention, pregnancy, ageing and arthritis. This is context for sizing decisions and is not medical advice.

If you have persistent swelling, swelling affecting only one hand, or a ring that has become stuck and is causing discolouration, numbness or increasing pain, seek medical attention. A stuck ring causing those symptoms is urgent and should not be waited out.
