Measuring for a Thumb Ring

Thumb rings are a bold, popular style, but finding the right size requires a slightly different approach than a standard ring finger.

How Much Larger is a Thumb?

On average, your thumb is significantly thicker and has a much broader knuckle than your ring finger. For most people, their thumb requires a ring that is 1.5 to 2 full US sizes larger than their standard ring finger on the same hand.

The Knuckle Challenge

The thumb knuckle is unique—it is often much wider than the base of the thumb itself. When sizing for a thumb ring:

  1. You must measure the widest part of the knuckle, not just where the ring will rest.
  2. The ring will need to slide over this knuckle with some resistance, meaning it may feel slightly loose once it sits at the base.
  3. Wide bands are very common for thumb rings. If you choose a band wider than 6mm, you may need to go up an additional half size for comfort.

Use the string or paper method specifically around the thumb knuckle to get the most accurate baseline measurement before checking a millimeter chart.
